Former Senator Johnstone Muthama among other leaders have told of their interest to vie for the seat.

However, despite his popularity, Muthama may have a hard time convincing Machakos people to vote for him.

This is because first, he has not been in any seat after which will be five years in 2022 meaning his grip on Machakos County is loosening.

Secondly, he will be going against the Wiper factor in Machakos and this will prove to be an uphill task.

This is because a coalition is growing between Mavoko member of parliament Patrick Makau, Kathiani Mp Robert Mbui, Yatta mp Charles Kilonzo and Matungulu MP Stephen Mule.

Sources indicate Robert Mbui who is also the organising secretary in the Wiper party may be the party's candidate deputised by Charles Kilonzo and supported by the other two.

This means they will have command of votes in their constituencies compared to Muthama who has no ally MP from Machakos.

It is obvious Kalonzo will support the Wiper candidate thus burying Muthama politically.

Thirdly the deputy governor Francis Maliti will be vying on a Maendeleo Chapchap party ticket where he will have the support of his boss Dr Alfred Mutua who will be vying for the presidency.

It is undeniable that both Mutua and Kalonzo command votes in Machakos and any other candidate not under these two will really struggle to clinch the Governors seat.
