The Kisii County government on Wednesday issued a total of Sh21 million to 64 farm groups under the Small holder Dairy Commercialization Programme (SDCP) for the last five years.

15 groups received a total of Sh5 million being the last tranche of the money in a ceremony that was presided over by the County Executive Committee (CEC) member in charge of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Development Esman Onsarigo at the Kisii Agriculture Training Centre. 

Mr Onsarigo, who represented Governor James Ongwae, urged beneficiaries to fully dedicate the money towards improving their farming activities.

“The county government has been engaging with farmers dealing in livestock with an aim of assisting them undertake best practices in dairy industry to boost milk production. 

"Increased productivity in the livestock sector is a step towards enhancing food security in the country which goes in tandem with President Kenyatta’s Big 4 agenda,” said Onsarigo.

The CEC indicated that farmers have received the grant meant for supporting dairy enterprises thereby greatly improving dairy performance and transforming lives of beneficiaries and their households.

He noted that through the programme, dairy groups have been trained adding that officers from the agriculture department have offered technical support for household dairy production besides, developing milk-marketing chains.

“The programme has resulted to an increase in milk production, improved fodder production, job creation and Increased quantity of milk in markets through reduced cattle diseases and improved animal husbandry,” said Onsarigo.
