Police in Mombasa gunned down a man who tried to snatch a firearm from a police officer.
The man tried to snatch a gun from an officer who was manning Gulf Bank in Bondeni area, Mombasa Wednesday.
The victim is alleged to have been mentally challenged.
A witness, Dan Mutembei says the man would have fired if he had the know-how of handling the gun.
"If he knew how to cock the gun, many people would have been killed," Dan Mutembei, a witness told The Star
Mutembei added that the second officer had to act swiftly to put down the man by shooting him.
The deceased's body has been taken to Coast General Hospital.
Police are yet to respond on the matter.
This comes a day after police recovered an AK 47 rifle in Busia that had been snatched from a police officer in Siaya.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Special Crimes Prevention Unit lead the operation which also resulted in the arrest of three suspects.
The gun had been stolen from Sirar Saitoti, an administration policeman, three weeks ago. The officer was also left with serious head injuries.
