The battle to succeed Governor John Nyagarama took a new twist on Monday after Mr Walter Nyambati, a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta, expressed his intentions to give a second trial.
For months now, Nyambati, who served as Kitutu Masaba MP from 2007-13, had taken a low profile with many pundits linking him to a possible exit from political exit.
Over the weekend, one of the leading candidates Mr Ben Momanyi of Borabu, challenged Mr Nyambati to consider having dialogue with another lead candidate Timothy Bosire 'to give him one formidable opponent'.
"I am told that Nyambati is not ready to retire. I will give him a call with Bosire and ask them to back one of them who can take me head-on. If they dare go to the ballot both of them, I will hand them a defeat," he claimed.
Mr Nyambati and Bosire hail from Kitutu Masaba Constituency and at some point they all served as MPs. Bosire, the ODM treasurer, beat Nyambati in 2013 polls. There is a possibility of the two working together owing to the fact that they come from same clan.
But on Monday, in a speech circulated across social media forums, Nyambati seemed to have formalised his candidature, a move that would see him facing off with Bosire, Momanyi and a host of contestants.
"I thank you for the support you have given me throughout. We moved to court but still things didn't favour us. I am encouraged to continue building so that we take over in 2022," said Nyambati in his speech.
He added: "My administration will focus on empowering the youth. We must give them capital and skills to establish themselves. This is what I am focused to do."
Momanyi, a second term Borabu MP, is said to be focused on detaching himself from the ghosts haunting Governor John Nyagarama's administration, with his critics arguing that he will 'continue perpetuating' Nyagarama's policies due to their closeness.
