The handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga happened last year on 9th March 2018.
At the time the country was in political turmoil, a situation that started with a hotly contested presidential election between the two on August 8th 2017, petition of election results by Nasa, the historic annulment of the presidential elections, the rerun and refusal of Nasa to participate in the Rerun, Uhuru being declared the President after the rerun and subsequent 'swearing-in' of Raila as the Peoples President.
After all that, the handshake came just at the right time, as that led to reduced political temperature and enhanced political stability thereafter.
The 'real' details of the handshake are yet to be known however President Uhuru and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have always insisted the handshake was to unite Kenya and bring peace.
The handshake was proceeded by Building Bridges Initiative a move the two leaders agreed will bring to an end historical hatred.
ODM party leader Raila Odina spent the anniversary day with Women Building Bridges for Kenya dubbed 'Embrace' where he and President Uhuru Kenyatta were awarded for the bold step they took for national reconciliation through the handshake.
The former Premier, through a statement on Twitter, indicated the award was in recognition of the national reconciliation efforts that started with the handshake.
"Received the joint award granted to President Uhuru Kenyatta and myself by the Women Building Bridges for Kenya Movement dubbed Embrace in recognition of the national reconciliation efforts that started with the handshake one year ago today," reads a tweet by the AU high commissioner on Infrastructure and development.
