ODM's Sospeter Ojaamong has officially declared his 2022 presidential candidature, eliciting mixed reactions from a section of Kenyans.
The Busia County governor made the announcement on Saturday, joining several other politicians who already declared interest in the country's top seat.
"Where common hopes and common dreams still live, I stand before you to announce my candidature for the position of the president in the Republic of Kenya in the 2022 elections," the second-time county boss declared.
Ojaamong joins Mombasa County Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Kilifi County's Amason Kingi and Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega, all from the ODM party in seeking the seat.
He has created a seemingly tough ground for any of them to get the party's nomination.
Ojaamong however, did not disclose which party he will use to seek votes from Kenyan voters.
"Join me in this quest, with a future of endless possibility stretching before us, together, starting today, I ask you to stand with me and together we’ll build the country we know we can be, and usher in a new era of freedom. There’s more that unites us than divides us," he added.
The politician, a former MP for Amagoro Constituency, is a close ally of ODM party leader Raila Odinga, just like the three mentioned candidates.
He enjoys massive following from his County residents who have since accused him of failing to provide development projects in Busia.
During the past general elections, his closest rival ex-Funyula MP Paul Otuoma accused him of rigging the poll.
"While elections focus on the divide, I want to focus on what we share. Because there’s sacred ground. But for each of us, I believe, there’s also common ground," Ojaamong said.
Other leaders who have publicly declared interest in the presidential race in 2022 general elections include Deputy President William Ruto, and Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua.
As he concluded his statement, Ojaamong urged Kenyans to be sure that those "who come after will say of us, that in our time we did everything that could be done."
The announcement elicited mixed reactions with many of his followers on social media terming it a joke of the year as seen here.
