Powerful Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i is set to declare openly his decision to work with 'statesman' Raila Odinga, it has been established.
The dependable minister in President Uhuru Kenyatta's governor reportedly reached the decision to run for Nyamira gubernatorial seat in 2022 after 'wide consultations'.
"He has consulted widely and will soon make his intentions clearly known to the people of Nyamira.
"The minister is keen to work with Raila since the former PM is quite popular in the vast county," said a youth leader, privy to the minister's political moves.
While Matiang'i may not openly launch his bid, he said, the minister is set to organise and attend major social events in the region in which he will at times invite Mr. Odinga.
Also, he has reportedly made his intention known to teachers union KNUT and a number of teachers would be making public endorsements during school functions.
His brother, John Matiang'i, is a national treasurer for KNUT and a popular figure among teachers, an advantage the former education minister is keen to sail on.
Further, he added, youths allied to his bid will do social media marketing before he formally launched his bid in few years time.
Mr. Matiang'i is likely to meet resistance from, among others, Timothy Bosire of ODM and Ben Momanyi of Wiper, both who are keen to succeed Governor John Nyagarama.
A close aide of Mr. Nyagarama, one George Momanyi, contends that the governor may back Mr. Momanyi.
"The governor favours Momanyi. The MP has been in politics for a long time and he's fit to carry ok with legacy."
Currently, the ODM governor is facing a Supreme Court petition filed by Walter Nyambati, who lost 2017 race to him.
