Undergraduates and postgraduates at the Moi University College of Health Sciences have asked the Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed to intervene and bring to an end lecturers strike that has lasted for over four months now.
Led by Joshua Manyasi, an undergraduate medical student, the students expressed concerns that the prolonged strike might affect their education calendar and graduation.
"As students, we really ask our CS to intervene and save us from these mess by ensuring that the agreement between Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentistry Union (KMPDU) and Moi University management is implemented for us to go to back to school," he said.
"A course that was supposed to take 6 years now it is taking 7 years. We have lost a lot of our resources and time something needs to be done to end this stalemate since we are tired of staying idle," added the student.
The lecturers who also work as specialized doctors at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret town have been on strike demanding for implementation of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) over allowances increment.
The students, however, blamed the Moi University management for failing to address the lecturers strike.
They wondered why other universities with medical colleges have resumed learning yet learning at Moi University's School of Health Sciences was still disrupted.
The students asked Moi University Vice Chancellor to sit down with the striking lecturers and agree on the way forward.
