There is often too much fanfare surrounding a visit to the retired president Daniel Moi.
Pictures fly around the internet, yet the political motive of the visits remain obscure.
However, none of these visits attracted so much attention than when Deputy President William Ruto was denied access to the aging former president.
It seems that leaders are going to see the president on mentorship. It remains unclear how influential the former president is as leaders troop to his Kabarak home once in a while.
If indeed it is for mentorship, an article published on Daily Monitor, a Ugandan digital news platform, there are claims that DP Ruto has been ‘frequenting’ Uganda to see President Museveni, for the same reasons as Kenyan leaders go to see Mzee Moi.
On the run to Uganda’s 2016 elections, the article claims that DP Ruto visited Uganda to drum up support for President Museveni especially among the Kalenjins living in Uganda.
Having failed to see the retired president, it only left Ruto with Uganda’s elderly statesman, President Museveni who has been in power for 32 years, and will be clocking 35 when his term ends in 2022.
“Perhaps that left Mr Museveni as the elderly statesman Mr Ruto could talk to,” the article poses.
DP Ruto is not the only politician who has visited Uganda’s president. Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and NASA leader Raila Odinga have been there to see Museveni.
Raila even addressed a rally praising him, coming short of asking Ugandans to vote for him.
