It has now emerged that the county government of Nakuru intends to erect a statue within Nakuru town in honor of the late Wangari Maathai.
Maathai who died in 2011 was known for her love for the environment and trees, and was even awarded a Nobel price for her efforts to preserve the surroundings.
Speaking on Wednesday, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyajui revealed plans to erect a bronze statue in honor of Maathai at the town's Nyayo Garden public park.
Speaking after laying the foundation stone at the site, he said the statue will be part of the Sh20 million project to refurbish the park, which has already began.
“When we started this project, some said it was not a priority but environmental matters are always a priority for us,” he was quoted by the People Daily.
He added that the five acre park will be turned into a modern green facility, together with an Information center, and a race track, calling upon residents to send in their suggestions.
“We recognise that public participation is vital in such a project. A portal will be opened to receive views from residents on how we can make it better,” added the county boss.
He called upon residents to help in cleaning the environment by practicing responsible littering habits.
