Residents of Sophia slum in Athi River on Sunday woke up to a rude shock after a man was found murdered.

The man, a father of four identified as Albanus Katumo was discovered near his home on Sunday morning.

His body was discovered by residents who alerted the police.

Eyewitnesses said the man was a known hawker and a resident of the area.

"His body was found just 600 metres from his home, he used to hawk jackets in Athi River, he was married with four kids with the young one barely two months old," said Peter Kiloo, an eyewitness.

The deceased body had visible wounds on the neck suspected to result from knife stabs. 

The incident was confirmed by Athi River police boss Salim Komora who said that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder.

The body was moved to Machakos level five hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting postmortem.

"Our officers collected a body belonging to one male citizen in Sofia slums this morning. We have launched investigations to unravel the murder," said Komora.

Irate residents condemned the act urging the police to conduct crackdown and nab criminals residing amongst them.
