Among Luos, elders really cherish the sight of their grandchildren and other young members of the society and find it very happy being surrounded by them.
This is because they are at some point considered to return to childhood because of old age, and therefore hardly take offence in things done by the young generation.
However, persistence in offending them can result in a terrible retaliation which though not done through violence, is always done through word of mouth.
1. "Chieng' iyuag ang'ee"
If an elderly person tells you 'Chieng' iyuag ang'ee, then know that you might have just been cursed and its best to immediately apologize to avoid problems in future.
The phrase translates to 'You shall regret one day' and can only be said if you have been a very bad person, especially if its coming from a parent or grandparent.
2. Nyuol Mbala
This translates to 'Giving birth is an eternal scar' and might mean that though they are regretting because of your troublesomeness, they are simply trying to live with it.
To make matters worse, your presence before their eyes will always remind them of your bad deeds and inability to treat them as your elders or parents.
3. Ayuakni
'I am crying because of you' is the translation for this word, and this in itself is a curse as an elder, especially a parent should not cry because of your disrespect and such other reasons.
However, it becomes a good sign when they shed tears of appreciation because of your achievement or a present you delivered to them.
