The Mijikenda Council of Elders has said that the coastal region of Kenya could be leading in early pregnancies in the whole of Africa.Council elders have said that the sinking tourism industry at the coast that left more than 70,000 people jobless in the region has contributed to idleness.Addressing the press in Malindi during this year’s Mijikenda cultural festival, Vincent Mwachiro, the chairman of the council said coast region needs an immediate remedy, especially to the youth.Mr. Mwachiro said, “let’s come together and rekindle hope to these young people by creating job opportunities. If you can create hope for a human being, you create wealth for that person.”According to Mwachiro, issues of early pregnancies, drug abuse and killing of old people due to witchcraft allegations were not witnessed in past days because residents were busy promoting tourism through cultural activities. He added that killing of old people in the region had killed the Mijikenda cultural practices, affecting tourism negatively.“I have been to Congo and Nigeria and the state there is not like this. Our youth have no knowledge about traditional practices at all because traditional education is no longer there. They lack important information about how life was sweet long time ago,” he said on Friday.
