In almost all households, shops, supermarkets, and even banks, the main source of security is padlocks and at times they fail to work or one loses his/her keys.
Francis Macharia, however, fixes those padlocks.
Macharia, an expert in key cutting, repair of padlocks and ignitions for both vehicles and motorbikes for over 20 years says that the job has been his main source of income.
He earns between Sh4,000 to Sh7,000 per day.
“I learned the job from one person who taught me and I followed keenly until I was an expert. The work has helped me educate my children, get food and also buy a plot where I currently stay," said Macharia who is stationed in Eldoret town.
He says that he loves his job to an extent that he cannot exchange it with any other job whatsoever.
"You only need to have a clump, file, screw driver, pliers and you're are good to go," noted Macharia when asked about what is required to begin such a business.
"This field has a lot of potentials but only needs hard work and patience. I urge Kenyans to exploit the field since it’s yet to be exploited," he advised.
Macharia says for one to learn the skills of key cutting, he/she needs to stay with an expert and be loyal to him/her by putting aside pride and following instructions keenly.
He now wants the Ministry of Education to introduce a trade test in key cutting since at the moment there is no polytechnic or technical institution offering such a course.
