The county and national governments have been empowering the disabled people in the society, through creating special educational opportunities, funding them, donation of wheelchairs, training them on special skills, etc.
These aim at making the disabled fit well in the competitive society.
In Maseno market, there are four disabled tailors who have combined forces to earn a living.
They all work jointly in one workshop that enables them to make Sh60,000 a week.
Speaking to a Hivisasa writer through a sign language interpreter, the four revealed how they are able to make that large sum of money in a week.
"We started small and at first we thought that we couldn't make it, since not everyone in the society could understand the sign language we used. We had to employ an interpreter who could convey our messages to our customers," said one of them.
They further noted that the secret behind their success is establishing and maintaining a positive rapport between them and customers.
They further noted that to be the best in their work, they had to understand the common needs and problems that their fellow villagers in the market were facing, and had to come up with immediate solutions that could help the society.
"In the business, we faced challenges since all of us had the same skills and customers were giving us different challenges to tackle, so to save time, each of us had to specialise in different skills like repairing clothes, making new design clothes, making uniforms, sewing, etc. Each day we make more profits since customers are increasing," said one of them.
The four are visually impaired and are not able to hear.
