As Deputy President William Ruto angles for the Somali vote as evidenced by his tour of Garissa County last week, he faces a rather formidable force in the name of controversial political activist Nazlin Umar.
On several occasions, Nazlin has publicly railed against DP Ruto on her social media platforms alleging he is one of the most corrupt individuals in Kenya. One notable moment that Nazlin blasted Ruto is when the country was grappling with a case of poisonous sugar.
She claimed that the DP was behind the sugar import scam.
"It is DP William Ruto behind the poisonous sugar and his right hand minions. I have said what other leaders fear. Stop going for his proxies," Nazlin claimed.
The vibrant Garissa female politician is apparently a thorn in Ruto's flesh.
With her in the expansive North Eastern region, Nazlin is definitely a threat to the DP's clamour for Somali votes.
From the last two successive elections, Presidential debates have become the biggest platform to subject all aspirants to public scrutiny and these allegations by Nazlin could be used against Ruto in the next elections.
Furthermore, North Eastern region is known for her voting blocs. If Nazlin successfully woes the region to back her in opposing the self-declared 'hustler', then the DP will have an uphill task in his biggest ever political race.
