The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) has launched investigations into claims that some Members of Parliament and other state officers could be having dual citizenship contrary to the Kenyan law.
In a statement, EACC Chief Executive Twalib Mbarak said the agency will investigate state officers claimed to be holding dual citizenship.
According to the Constitution Article 78(2) on citizenship and leadership, a state officer or member of the defence forces is not allowed to hold dual citizenship.
In view of the above, EACC said those found guilty will be dealt with in accordance to the law, adding that the penalty may include; removal from office.
"EACC has launched investigations to verify these allegations with a view to taking appropriate action against the public officers in accordance with the law. Such action could include initiating mechanisms for removal from office for violation of Chapter Six of the Constitution," the statement read in part.
This comes barely a week after activist Okiya Omtata urged the commission to investigate ten lawmakers and a former Member of Parliament for allegedly holding foreign passports.
"We are requesting the EACC to conduct an audit of all MPs for the purpose of establishing if any of them have allegiance to foreign nations via citizenship or the possession of instruments as green cards,"Omtata said.
