Garissa County hosts top politicians whose influence and role will be important in determining the country’s next president in 2022.
The county is described as North Eastern region's center for politics.
In the 2017 general election, Garissa and other North Eastern counties overwhelmingly voted for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election.
The region voted for Uhuru after his Jubilee government restored security by taming terror militants of Al-shabaab who had become a nuisance to the locals and Kenyans at large.
With the 2022 succession politics taking shape, Garissa and North Eastern will play a key role in determining who succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The region is already aligned to Deputy President William Ruto as 2022 takes shape.

1. Aden Duale
The Garissa Township MP is serving his second term in office.
The leader of Majority in the National Assembly is DP Ruto’s close ally and confidant.
He was among politicians who helped form the United Republican Party (URP) that later merged to for Jubilee Party.
Duale has been described as the engine that will spearhead DP Ruto’s campaigns in 2022.
The Garissa lawmaker has been quoted asking former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to endorse DP Ruto’s presidential bid in 2022.
2. Mohamed Yusuf Haji
He is the Garissa senator serving a second term in office.
The former Provincial Commissioner (PC) is among veteran politicians in the country.
He has a vast political experience and is likely to advise DP Ruto on how to campaign in his push to succeed President Kenyatta in 2022.
The former defence Minister is unlikely to seek re-election as senator in 2022.
There are, however, claims that he could surprisingly bid for the Garissa governor seat.
3. Ali Bunow Korane
He is the Garissa governor serving his first term in office.
Korane was elected in 2017 on Jubilee Party ticket.
The governor has vast experience in public administration having served as District Commissioner and Permanent Secretary (PS).
Korane is also a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto.
