Popular Langas estate in the outskirts of Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu County is once again on the spot for all the wrong reasons.
The estate which is occupied by Kenyans who cannot afford ‘modern’ houses in other parts of the town has been hitting the media for robbery, brutal killings and drugs and illicit brew.
Recently, several cases of rape and defilement have been reported in the area, school girls and women being the victims.
Just recently, a young girl, Nancy* (not her real name) revealed how her uncle has been defiling her for years. According to the minor, her uncle first defiled her after tricking her to help him look for a shoe which he had misplaced in his room.
“The first time he called me into his room and told me to help him look for his shoes under the bed. When I bent down to look for the shoes, he carried me to his bed and defiled me,” narrated Nancy.
The heinous actions in Langas come at the time when several cases of rape and defilement continue to be reported in different parts of the country despite the tough laws meant to minimize the cases.
The children's department in Kapseret sub-county admits that about ten cases of sexual assault are reported in their office each month.
Simon Orenge, a Children's officer in Kapseret confirmed the rise of such cases in the area.
