Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said the move will stop the rising cases of unrest being witnessed in different schools in the country.

Appearing before the National Assembly Education Committee, Mr Kipsang said his office will not allow rogue students to dictate on how to run learning institutions.

“The direction that we need to go is a day school system where students operate from home. The ministry would want to increase opportunities in day schooling so that parents can have an opportunity of engaging their children and making sure that the children are properly taken care of.”

“Going forward that is the direction that we are going to adopt. Day schooling is the future that will be able to help us as a country to handle this issue of arson,” he said.

Here are some reactions from Garissa parents following the proposal by Mr Kipsang:

“The government should not phase out boarding schools in the country. As a parent, I work in different towns and having my son go to day school means I have to be around at all time,” Osman Khalif said.

“Boarding school helps us parents a lot because we are busy with work and sometimes we travel to another town when our children are in school,” said Yasmin Hussein.

“That is a good idea to remove boarding schools. Parents have relaxed in their responsibility and having day schools will give parents time to interact with their children,” said Abdihakim Adan.

More than 30 schools have been torched and property destroyed and at least 120 students have been arrested.
