The vocal MP is the chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, which has been on the spot after the 16 per cent VAT on petroleum products was implemented and later slashed to eight per cent after the Finance Bill 2018 was signed into law by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In November 2017, Ichung’wa attacked the Orange and Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, accusing him of inciting residents and gathering hooligans to cause mayhem.

In a video posted on Twitter by The Newsmakers on November 21, 2017, Ichung’wa called for action to be taken against Raila for allegedly inciting Kenyans against each other.

“You cannot be gathering hoodlums in the streets, you cannot be inciting people and profiling one ethnic community against the other, and yet expect to be served with justice and treated with respect..... I maintain that Raila Odinga has behaved like a common hoodlum, inciting Kenyans against each other and the law now must take effect and action taken against Mr Odinga," said Ichung'wa.

This was during the 2017 electioneering period which was marred with chaos and confusion.

However, the former Prime Minister on March 4, 2018, met with President Kenyatta at his Harambee House office, where they two resolved to work together to heal Kenya following the divisive 2017 elections.

The duo said it was time to put to an end the political differences that have divided more than four generations of Kenyans.

“We need to save our children from ourselves. My brother and I have come together to say 'this dissent stops here'. We refuse to allow our diversity to kill the nation," said Raila.
