Barrack Obama Senior, father to former United States President Barrack Obama was a celebrated economist before he died on November, 24, 1982.
Born in Rachuonyo District in Homa Bay County, Obama was raised in Nyang’oma, Kogello, Siaya county before the US graduate joined the joined the public service.
But Obama was also an alcohol addict who frequented a joint in Nairobi’s Kaloleni estate to have some beers over chats with colleagues, politicians and fellow classmates.
According to George Anyim, the owner of the pub and grandson to the joint’s original founder, the place also at some point served Luo political dons, Jaramogi Oginga, Tom Mboya and Argwings Kodhek.
On the fateful afternoon, Obama arrived and sat at his usual corner and ordered what he wanted as he conversed with his friends and fellow drinkers before leaving for his home in Woodley Estate.
Apparently avoiding going through the city center, Obama drove out past City Stadium on Jogoo Road.
But according to Sally H Jacobs in her book ‘The Other Barrack’, Obama’s was never to get back home ending up dead in an accident just near his gate.
He reportedly rammed his white pick-up truck headlong into a eucalyptus tree at the side of the road, dying instantly aged 46.
