As the clock ticks towards the 2022 general election, President Uhuru Kenyatta has been warned against "betraying" ODM leader Raila Odinga if he is to build a united country.
According to US-based legal scholar Prof. Makau Mutua, the future of Kenya will be determined by the manner the President handles the ODM leader after their handshake.
Prof. Mutua believes that should the head of state shortchange the former Premier, then the country could tear apart.
" If Mr Kenyatta betrays Mr Odinga, he will be repeating history. You know what they say- those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it," said Prof. Mutua.
While basing his argument on the fallout between the country's first President Jomo Kenyatta and his Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Prof. Mutua says that the duo's disagreement was the turning point in Kenya's messy politics and that President Kenyatta cannot afford to repeat that.
While hailing the handshake between Uhuru and Raila, Mutua says that the political deal has helped the country a great deal.
The law Professor that the future of Kenya will be at stake if another member of the Kikuyu community takes over the country's leadership.
To him, the treatment the former Prime Minister gets from the President will make or break Kenya.
" That's why I believe how Mr Kenyatta deals with Mr Odinga- and how both of them approach 2022, may make or break Kenya. God save us all," he added.
