A two-storey building collapsed at Butalii Shopping Centre in Kakamega County on Thursday.
The building, which was still under construction collapsed with workers on site.
The rescue operation is still underway, with an unknown number of workers trapped under the rabble.
In a Twitter post shortly after the incident occurred, former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale noted that two people had been reported dead.
"A building under construction at Butali in Malava Kakamega has collapsed. Unknown number of workers are trapped, several rescued and two found dead. Rescue operation still underway. May God give their families and friends the strength to bear with this disaster," wrote Boni Khalwale.
The incident comes just weeks after another building collapsed in Nairobi.
A classroom at Precious Talent School collapsed a few weeks ago killing eight students while 64 other students sustained different types of injuries.
After the Precious Talent School tragedy, the government, through the Ministry of Education led a crackdown in school that have poorly constructed structures.
