For years, parliamentarians have been labelled 'greedy' with numerous petitions challenging their pay hikes launched in various courts.

And in an interview with the Standard, Kaluma conceded that most of MPs pay goes to loans and mortgages.

"Besides the mortgages, loans and taxation, you will notice that most of us earn Sh1, 000 and below," he argued.

The second term MP and a close ally of Raila Odinga, said most politicians operate with little or zero salaries.

He also expressed concern over the lavish lifestyle of some elected leaders who he says also earn little but live extravagantly.

"I am astonished by the fact that some elected leaders spend so much money that is not commensurate with what they earn," he claimed.
