Lowly and simple as they may be, barmaids seem to have a special way of bonding with men. So much that the world takes some of them to be immoral.
Mostly, the society holds the notion that a bar is not a conducive place of work for a woman because it is a platform for alcoholism and immorality.
Miriam Jebet, a barmaid in the outskirts of Eldoret town openly dismisses that notion.
According to her, being a barmaid is just a normal job like any other. She believes that character is in one’s inner conscience and that if one decides to be immoral, it is a personal decision which should not be generalized.
“I have been a barmaid for three years and I decided to do this job so as to put bread on the table for my two sons. I am a principled lady and do not entertain acts of immorality at work,” Jebet told Hivisasa.
"Finding a good bartender is like finding a good friend, as anyone who loves the nightlife can attest. It's someone you can count on to be there with a smile and an outstretched hand, and in the bartender's case, that hand holds a delicious drink. While most people walk into a bar to relax, bartenders are there to do a serious and difficult job,” added the 28-year-old mother of two.
Jebet says that her job entails making and serving drinks, receiving payments, and keeping the bar area clean and stocked.
She insisted that barmaids deserve maximum respect since they are putting bread on the table with their job just like other Kenyans.
