Ethics and Anti-corruption commission has summoned cabinet secretary for Tourism Najib Balala to be questioned on an irregular award of Sh100 million contract to America Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) Kenya.
The said contract was awarded in 2017 when ASTA hosted the Destination Expo Conference.
EACC has asked CS Balala through a letter to report to the EACC's headquarter at integrity Centre in Nairobi at 9 am on Monday 18th February 2019 to record a statement in order to facilitate the investigation.
Daily Nation reported that Tourism Principal secretary Joe Okudo has been recording statements over the same issue which has led to differences emerging within the ministry.
CS Najib Balala, through a statement in twitter, stated they have been cooperating with the investigators since the inquiry stated.
"EACC inquiry on the American Society of Travel Agents Expo that took place at KICC in Feb 2017 organised by ASTA - Kenya chapter has been an ongoing process which the Ministry of Tourism has fully cooperated since the start of the inquiry," read a tweet by the Cabinet Secretary.
He went on to show how ASTA has led to an increase in Tourist arrival in the country from the USA by double digits.
"The Tourist arrivals from the USA doubled in 2018 with 225,000 visitors due to the partnership with The American Society of Travel Agents who are the key buyers of #MagicalKenya as a destination," reads another tweet by CS Balala.
