The government's announcement that it will start deducting house levies from all employed workers starting next month, has not gone well with a number of Kenyans.
One person who has expressed his disappointment is former Presidential Candidate Prof James Ole Kiyiapi who noted that Kenyans are being over taxed.
In a tweet, Kiyiapi noted that Kenyans are already paying a lot of taxes, but are yet to benefit from the same, due to mismanagement of resources.
"We are already overtaxed, we give taxes for Government to implement programs including construction of houses (for who?),Now a housing levi, food levies, fuel levies, road levies etc. Then billions of the same taxes are stolen! Our problem is not of scarcity but of mismanagement!" he tweeted.
Deducting housing levies from all employees both in public and private sector is part of the government's plan to raise funds for one of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda of affordable housing for all Kenyans.
In a notice on Tuesday directed to all employers, the government ordered the latter to start deducting 1.5% housing taxes from employees salaries for construction of affordable houses across the country.
