A group of politicians drawn from the Rift Valley region now want the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report implemented through a quick referendum.
Led by former Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto, the group held a parallel retreat to discuss the report in Kajiado, as their rival colleagues held another one in Naivasha, Nakuru county.
The 16 MPs and former politicians proposed that the referendum be held early next year, and now want a committee of experts to fine-tune the report.
"We want to have a people-driven process that is well-prepared as this will ensure that BBI report is handled to help Kenyans enjoy inclusivity and unity,” said Rutto.
Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko said that a quick naming of a committee of experts will speed up the process of signature collection and the other required processes.
Rutto called for a quick enactment of a referendum law and also called for the appointment of people with firm legal backgrounds into the committee of experts.
The group appears to be in agreement with the other one, which is allied to Deputy President William Ruto, which on Friday made a U-turn on the BBI debate.
After days of pushing for a parliamentary implementation, the politicians who concluded their retreat at the Lake Naivasha Resort said that they will accept any implementation mode.
