The Ministry of Education has closed over thirty schools in Mavoko sub-county of Machakos county.
This was disclosed by Machakos county director of education Shamsha Mohammed on Wednesday who said that the schools failed to meet the required standards.
The move has seen 5,000 students out of school.
According to Shamsha, most of the schools were found to be operating unlicensed and without qualified teachers. Others had massive congestion and wanting structures which were endangering the lives of the pupils.
"Some private schools structures were wobbling and had shown some sound of caving in while others operated near garbage heaps and raw sewer," said Shamsha.
She the affected closed schools will remain closed until further notice.
The county director also noted that other 25 schools have been issued with a notice to comply or face closure.
However, those waiting to sit for their KCPE examinations won't be affected since they will sit for their exams in their respective schools.
Mavoko Member of Parliament Patrick Makau who was present stated that although private schools come in handy to help improve education in the region, they should ensure the safety of pupils and quality education standards.
Poverty and lack of enough public schools have led to mushrooming of wanting schools in the region.
