The two were charged with crimes against humanity over their alleged involvement in the 2007/08 post-election skirmishes at the Hague, Netherlands-based court.

Speaking on Thursday, he narrated how some fellow politicians lost belief in their 2013 presidential bid as a result of their implication, others deciding not to associate with them.

He recalled how they approached a certain politician who was harbouring presidential dreams for his support, but he reportedly turned their offer down, 'predicting' their jail term.

According to the DP, the politician even concluded that they would be jailed for 10 years each, proposing that they support him instead and he will return the favour in 2022.

"Hakuna aliyetuamini. Hata nakumbuka tulienda kwa kiongozi mmoja kuomba ushirikiano lakini akasema tutafungwa miaka kumi, kwa hivyo tumuunge mkono alafu wakati tutamaliza kifungo atakuwa amemaliza ndio sasa atuunge (No one believed in us. I remember we approached a certain leader for support but he said that we would be jailed for ten years. He proposed that we should back him and then he would back us after the ten years, as he will have completed his term)," he said.

The DP made the remarks on Kameme FM on Thursday, while dismissing fellow politicians who have refused to believe in some of the Jubilee government's projects, including the free housing initiative.

He said that just like the Standard Gauge Railway, the project will be successfully carried out.

"Tuliposema tutaunda SGR watu waliuliza mtafanya aje hii kitu imeshindikana kwa miaka thelathini, lakini tuliifanya kwa miaka tatu. Hata hii ya manyumba pia tutafanya (People doubted us when we proposed the SGR project. They wondered if we could do what the nation had been unable to do for 30 years but we did it in three years. We will also successfully implement the housing project)," he said.
