A mother of one has died after a reversing lorry lost brakes and hit the houses she was sleeping in at Mikindani in Mombasa County.
The 21-year-old woman was sleeping together with her husband their baby when the lorry hit their house this Tuesday morning.
The husband and their three-year-old baby were both severely injured were rushed to Coast Provincial General Hospital where the two are receiving treatment.
It is alleged the driver was reversing on a steep road near their house before the lorry lost its brakes and plunged into their house killing the mother instantly and seriously injuring the two.
The lorry was loaded with building material, particularly sand.
Johnston Ipara, the Police Commander in Mombasa, has confirmed the accident. He said they lorry is being investigated to determine its state.
“The incident happened at around 8 am when the family was still asleep. The lorry was taking the sand to a construction site near the house of the victims.
“Our officers from the Traffic Department have started their probe to establish the status of the lorry which has been towed to our police station in the sub-county,” said Mr Ipara as quoted by Nation.
The commander also confirmed that the lorry driver is in police custody as investigations start.
