During this month, Muslims are expected to fast and engage in prayers. Muslims believe this month is the holiest month in their calendar and that there is a reward (tawaab) that they get. Muslims fast during the day where they are not allowed to eat, drink, smoke or engage in any sexual activities even for the married couples until at night when they are allowed to have sex.

However, for one to fast during this month, he/she has to be of sound mind to fast since those that have a mental condition are not allowed to fast during this month.

Young people below the age of seven years are encouraged to fast but it is not a must for them to do so. For one to fast, he or she must be of good health since sick people are not allowed to fast but will have to compensate for the missed days before the next month of Ramadan comes.

Some of the people exempted from fasting in this holy month are the elderly people but there is a price they will have to pay; either feed 60 people in one day or feed one person in sixty days. Travellers are not allowed to fast.

People travelling for long distances can choose either to fast or not but are exempted from fasting since the journey will be tiring to them but will have to compensate the number of days they were travelling .

Nursing mothers are also not allowed to fast as well as women who are menstruating since they are deemed unclean. However, they are required to compensate these days before the next month of Ramadhan.
