A Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) lecturer was on Tuesday arraigned before a Chuka Court together with two other people to answer to manslaughter charges.

The three accused persons were being charged with manslaughter after a man, Mwiti Gitonga, died when a balcony of a night club collapsed at around 1 pm.

Reports indicate that the three accused persons are KeMU lecturer who is also the owner of the night club, Martin Koome, the bar's attendant, Pius Mugambi, and the building’s owner, Florah Kainyu.

The court revealed that 13 Chuka University students who were also at the night club suffered injuries during the December 7 incident at Coco Lounge night club when the protective unit collapsed in Ndagani market.

The prosecution filed an application requesting for more time to conclude their investigations on the matter.

The three accused who denied the charges requested to be released on bail after being detained in police custody for a week while investigations were being done.

Justice Njoki Kahara declined to grant the prosecution more time and ordered that the three suspects be released on a Sh150,000 bond each or Sh100,000 cash bail each.

The case will be mentioned on January 2, 2020, and the hearing date was set for March 9, 2020.
