The deputy governor made the remarks on Monday while condoling with residents of Lelmokwo village in Kipkabus, following the death of two boys who are reported to have drowned while swimming in a pool of water at a quarry.

The second boy drowned while attempting to rescue his friend.

The deputy governor asked contractors to manage their sites to avoid cases of deaths and instructed contractors to ensure their construction sites are fenced and manned.

“We should not be losing lives due to carelessness of some individuals who are supposed to be professional in their work. Contractors should take responsibility and manage their sites well,” said Chemno.

“These sites should be fenced off to avoid access by children and even vulnerable adults. When these sites are fenced, the collected water can be harnessed for domestic and irrigation purposes," he added.

Chemno further called for the flattening of abandoned quarries.

So far, five residents have perished following quarry-related accidents in different sites in Ainabkoi constituency.
