A phone call from Deputy President William Ruto to Kisii County Commissioner Godfrey Kigochi rescued millionaire businessman Don Bosco Gichana's homecoming rally.
Security chiefs had earlier on Thursday indicated that they were not aware of the Friday's homecoming rally, precipitating reaction from Mr. Gichana, who was released from Tanzania prison a month ago.
"I only fear death. If you want to arrest me, I am waiting for you. Nobody will take Gusii stadium from us," he fired back.
Mr. Gichana, who commands political support from Nyamira and Kisii Counties, had pleaded guilty to money laundering and fraud, leading to his five years sentence.
But a source privy to the Thursday's drama said Ruto called the county security chief asking him to drop the tough conditions.
"The DP asked the commissioner to grant security, further stating the Mr. Bosco was only holding a prayer rally," said the source.
Earlier, Bosco, a close ally of Raila Odinga and the DP, visited Ruto's Karen office for a brief meeting. Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi facilitated the meeting.
On his official Facebook page, Bosco, who will land at Nyakongo before proceeding to Rikenye for his mother's memorial service, said the standoffs had been solved.
"Gusii stadium standoff, has been sorted. Good people it's all systems go. We thank the most high who has always been there for me. Amen."
By Friday morning, hundreds of supporters selected from both Nyamira and Kisii Counties had gathered in Nyakongo market to usher Mr. Bosco and his guests in.
