While addressing members of the public during a fundraising event in Mtomondoni, Kilifi County on Sunday, Kingi urged leaders to concentrate on service delivery rather than engaging in premature campaigns.

He noted that it is too early for candidates from the Coast region to launch their presidential bids, adding that the region must be united before producing a candidate for the 2022 contest.

"There are things that we should address before saying who will be our presidential candidate. Our problem is unity. The Coast region should be united before we say who our flag bearer is," said Kingi, as quoted by the Daily Nation.

Kingi’s remarks contradict those of his Mombasa counterpart Hassan Joho. The flamboyant governor has on several occasions declared that he is the best man to succeed Uhuru in the upcoming polls.

During his tour in Wajir County on Sunday, Joho said he has what it takes to beat Deputy President William Ruto in the 2022 race to State House.

“I’m surprised of people talking about Ruto. I can floor Ruto myself, without help," he said, amid cheers from the crowd.

The governor also opined that Ruto, who is considered one of the front runners in the 2022 presidential race, lacks the qualities of a good leader.
