There was drama on Wednesday at a funeral in Bonyando village, Kirwanda in Kisii County after angry mourners beat and chased a funeral chairman accusing him of failing to give locals an opportunity to give speeches.
Angered mourners booed Lawrence Machana before they grabbed off a microphone from him.
"Machana was drunk yet he was the chairman running the funeral program. Due to his drunkenness, he denied locals an opportunity to talk before a church service prompting mourners to chase him," said a local chief who identified himself as John.
The administrator said during the scuffle Machana lost his phone and a wristwatch.
"Mourners stole the victim's phone and a watch during the dramatic incident. He was also injured on his left eye and forehead," noted John.
Mr. John warned locals against accepting to officiate funeral ceremonies while drunk.
"Speeches are common at any funeral. Those officiating such events must follow the procedure by giving an opportunity to locals to mourn the deceased and comfort the bereaved families," he noted.
The chief said Nyumba Kumi officials intervened before the burial ceremony proceeded.
He said the victim was rushed to a local hospital for treatment following the injuries he sustained.
