Three out of the four suspects charged with terrorism in relation to the 2015 Garissa University terror attack have been found guilty.
In a ruling on Wednesday, Milimani Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi found the three; Mohamed Abdikar, Hassan Edin Hassan and Hassan Rashid Mberesero guilty of 156 terror charges.
In his ruling, Magistrate Andayi said the prosecution proved its case against the three, adding that the evidence tabled clearly indicated that they were the masterminds of the attack that left 147 students dead and scores injured.
The magistrate further noted that the three were in communication with the planners of the attack and even knew of the plot to attack the university.
“I am satisfied that the accused persons were members of Al-Shaabab and they knew of the plot and were also part of the attackers,” he ruled.
However, Magistrate Andayi freed Sahal Diriye Hussein of all the charges, noting that the prosecution failed to prove a prima-facie case against him.
The three convicts will be sentenced on July 3 with the prosecution asking for the maximum penalty.
The convicts were charged with 156 counts of terrorism with the prosecution lining up 23 witnesses in the case.
