It has now emerged that the mega political meeting that was to be held in Kakamega County today (Saturday) has been called off at the last minute.
The meeting organised by allies of President Uhuru Kenyatta under the Kieleweke tag and those of opposition boss Raila Odinga was called off following revelations that Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi would not attend.
It has emerged that Mudavadi rejected requests by former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth, nominated MP Maina Kamanda and COTU boss Francis Atwoli to attend the function.
According to ANC Secretary General Barrack Muluka, the snub was inevitable as the party had planned other engagements in Mombasa on the same day.
According to Muluka, there was also a scheme for Mudavadi to be forced into reconciliation with rebel nominated MP and former Secretary General Godfrey Osotsi.
"All I am seeing with the event organisers is a situation where Mudavadi was to be pushed to a fix at the dais, and forced in the glare of the cameras to a handshake with the nominated MP, hence jeopardise the party disciplinary mechanism,” he told the Standard.
According to Kakamega Senator Cleopa Malala who was tasked with the role of organising the function, over 80 MPs from across the country had confirmed their attendance.
However, he has since been forced to call it off, after a massive mobilisation campaign led by the Senator on the ground.
Initial reports indicated that the meeting was to be used to announce the nation's next move politically, a decision that was to be based on the Uhuru-Raila union and the 2022 elections.
