Former Prime Minister and AU Chair of Infrastructure Raila Odinga created a humorous moment during a requiem mass for the late Dr Jane Kiano when he told mourners that he was a "hustler" together with President Uhuru Kenyatta since their parents came from humble backgrounds and struggled their way up.
In a veiled jab at Deputy President William Ruto who has sold the hustler narrative, Raila Odinga said that the late Julius Kiano was a hustler who, just like his father and Jomo Kenyatta, were sons of peasants.
Raila Odinga reiterated that the nation should recognise the contribution of women and lauded President Kenyatta for awarding women at State House recently.
When he rose to speak, Deputy President William Ruto steered clear of politics and described the late Dr Jane Kiano as " an elegant, beautiful girl from Tumutumu who was a wife, a mother and an agent of girl and women empowerment and a great patriot."
Ruto lauded Kiano for leaving behind a rich legacy by building Maendeleo ya Wanawake organisation.
He equally praised her for mentoring and inspiring many women.
President Uhuru Kenyatta described Jane Kiano as a "mother, grandmother, friend, mentor, sister...a person who was something to us all..."She did a lot for this country without asking for anything in return," the President added.
President Kenyatta too steered clear of politics during the occasion and praised the late for doing things "because it was the right thing to do".
