Opposition leader Raila Odinga told President Uhuru Kenyatta not to invite his deputy William Ruto to the much talked about March 9 handshake, it has been revealed.
As discussions over the need for the leaders to make peace went on, Raila agreed to eventually meet President Kenyatta in a closed-door meeting that would bury their differences.
He, however, put one condition to Uhuru; that he should not bring his deputy along. The revelations were made on Tuesday as the opposition bigwig toured Kitui to open Kitui Villa which is owned by Law scholar Makau Mutua.
"I said I didn’t want to talk to those people who want to talk about 2022. He (Uhuru) said he would not come with Ruto, but also asked that I don’t come with Kalonzo. We agreed that the initial talks were to be talks about talks,” Raila said.
The remarks seem to corroborate what Deputy President William Ruto said during an interview with NTV.
Asked whether he knew about the handshake, Ruto said he had discussed it with Uhuru before the president met Raila.
He said they saw it fit to let the two great leaders meet alone.
