Monday's attack at Ballidogle military airbase was successfully repulsed, neither US nor SNA suffered casualties, US Mission in Somalia has said.
The militants raided the military base which is used for training of Somalia Special forces ahead of AMISOM's scheduled exit in 2021 from Somalia.
In a statement, US said that Somalia National Army was able to contain the militants with no casualties reported during the exchanges.
"The security forces stopped this ultimately failed attack due to their alertness and swift response, not allowing the attackers to breach the outer defensive perimeters of the base. We are thankful that there were no SNA causalities between the multiple attacks," read the statement.
"This attack yet again demonstrates al-Shabaab violently opposes progress towards peace and prosperity in Somalia. The United States affirms our strong commitment to the people and government of Somalia and to assist collective efforts to degrade terror groups and build a stronger and prosperous Somalia that offers a brighter future for its people."
Earlier, the Al-Shabaab militants who claimed responsibility, insisted that fighting was still going on, promising to give update in subsequent statements.
"In early hours of Monday morning, an elite squad of Al-Shabaab launched a daring attack on US military base at Ballidogle Airport in Lower Shebelle.
"After breaching perimeters of heavily fortified base, the brigade stormed the military complex, engaging crusaders in intense fight. Fighting is still going on," the statement read.
Elsewhere, Italian military convoy was on Monday also attacked by the militants, with one person reported dead during the fierce exchanges.
The EU has been training Somali national army among other things, he said.“The attack happened as Mogadishu was under a lockdown due to a high-level meeting at the UN headquarters. And it’s believed the convoy may have been coming to or from that meeting."
