Garissa County Governor Ali Korane has finally registered for the government's controversial Huduma Namba.
Speaking on Monday after he received his personal identification number, Korane expressed concern that many of the residents in the county might be locked out of the exercise. This, he said, was due to the fact that many youths are yet to get national identity cards (IDs).
"I registered for Huduma Number in Garissa today. I was accompanied by Deputy Governor HE Abdi Dagane and other senior county officials. As we take part in this exercise, the national government must be cognizant of the fact that many of our people cannot register for lack of IDs," said Korane in a Twitter post.
The governor's statement comes even as the national government threatened of unspecified consequences for those who will not have registered within the specified time frame.
The issue of acquiring national ID cards in Garissa has been a matter of concern to a majority of youths. The registry department has been accused of subjecting the locals to stringent scrutiny, leaving them without the vital document.
