Last week, news of demolition of buildings on riparian lands came to Kenyans as a shock.
A section of Kenyans was happy with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the County Government of Nairobi’s move to reclaim grabbed land, while another section ridiculed this move.
However, in as much as Kenyans are divided on this issue, what does this “riparian land” mean?
Encyclopedia.com defines riparian land as Riparian land the terrain that is adjacent to rivers and streams and is subject to periodic or occasional flooding.
Kenyans though, have had different definitions of riparian land.
In a video shared on Facebook by Daily Nation, a man has a funny definition of riparian land that has left the whole nation in laughter.
When the question is posed, he defines it this way:
“You see, they are people who used to grab land and they use hidden identities. The riparian people are people whom you cannot trace, when you want to get them, as the culprit, and therefore, it is high time we have to dig deep to know who this people are.”
“The riparians in their hideout, we are coming for them. As early as even now!! So they either should surrender or they wait for us to reach them,” he adds
The demolitions on the riparian lands has entered the second week where more property built on such land will come tumbling down.
