Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has pledged to provide free lunch for candidates in one of the primary schools in his county.
Class eight students at Mwiki Primary School in Githurai, Ruiru Sub-County, will get free lunch for three days during the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations which kick off tomorrow.
The governor announced the plans when he visited the learning institution on Thursday to motivate the candidates ahead of the crucial test.
During his visit, the county boss also distributed success cards and mathematical sets to all the candidates.
"Education is one of the most important ingredients to a happy successful life. I take this opportunity to wish all candidates in the country success in their exams. My thoughts and prayers are with them," Waititu posted on his Facebook page after the visit.
Mwiki Primary School which is located in the famous Githurai 45 is a 'struggling' institution in many aspects.
According to Waititu, Mwiki is the most densely populated public primary school in Kenya, with over 3,000 students.
The high number of pupils makes this institution overcrowded since it sits on a plot measuring 84 metres by 86 metres, which is smaller than a soccer pitch.
According to Lilian Waweru, a teacher, a whooping 695 students from the school are scheduled to sit this year’s KCPE exams at the centre.
Apart from the high population and limited space, other challenges facing the school include a low number of teachers, lack of classrooms, desks, toilets and playground.
Mwiki, however, is one of the top performing schools in Kiambu County.
