Demolitions of structures on riparian land in Mombasa is set to kick-off this weekend.
County Secretary, Francis Thoya indicated that over 1,000 buildings have been earmarked for demolition starting Saturday, August 25.
"We’ll start as early as tomorrow (Saturday) in Bombo, Utange. Right now we are organising equipment. It’s something heavy. These continually cause perennial flooding when it rains. All these structures will be demolished," Thoya said on Friday.
Areas targeted include Kwa Bulo, Nyali, Jomvu, Kiembeni and Junda.
Rights group Haki Africa through its Executive Director Hussein Khalid has supported the demolitions.
In a letter to Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Khalid indicated that the said areas hold more than 2,000 structures, flats, residential houses, beach hotels, apartments, warehouses and offices that should be brought down.
“We’ve established that the Nema land use guidelines for buildings to be at least 60 metres from the high watermark and public access to be no more than 400m apart have been flouted by many beach hotels,” read the letter in part.
In April, KeNHA led demolitions of structures seating on road reserves in Likoni, to pave way for the expansion of Malindi-Bagamoyo road.
