Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has promised to help honey farmers in the county acquire modern machines for harvesting and storing honey.
Speaking when she met honey farmers in Kitui South on Thursday, Ngilu also pledged to help farmers market their products locally and internationally.
She revealed that the county is hunting for foreign investors who will help honey farmers market their products.
Governor Ngilu indicated that adoption of modern ways of honey harvesting, storing, packaging and branding will be significant for the county’s economic growth.
She noted that the honey sector has employed hundreds of young people and contributes largely to the county's annual revenue collections.
“Beekeeping is part of the lives of Kitui people and as the county leadership we are going to help farmers source for markets locally and internationally,” Ngilu stated.
The Kitui county boss asked honey farmers not to sell their products to unscrupulous businesspeople at throwaway prices.
Ngilu revealed that her county will soon give grants to farmers to venture into beekeeping and other farming activities.
She urged farmers in all sectors to take advantage of value addition in order to benefit from their farming ventures.
The governor indicated that food security is one of her key agendas and promised to seek local and foreign investors in order to ensure residents have enough food.
