Anyone can experience swollen feet from time to time.
It's a common condition that can sometimes be caused by walking for too long and standing for long periods. However, it could also be as a result of underlying health conditions.
Here are 5 causes of swollen feet;
1. Heart failure
The heart does the work of pumping blood throughout the body. Failing health, therefore, does not pump as effectively as it should. As a result, blood pools in the veins causing the swelling effect.
2. Kidney disease
The kidneys are the organs responsible for managing fluids in the body. Therefore, fluids could build up on the veins in the tissues if the kidneys have been affected by a disease disabling them to get rid of excess fluids in the body.
3. Blood clot
A blood clot could also cause swelling of the feet and ankles. When blood clots in the veins of the legs, it can prevent blood from flowing back to the heart. This causes blood buildup around the legs and ankle causing the swelling.
4. Lymphedema
Lymphedema or simply oedema can cause your feet and ankles to swell. Lymph is a protein fluid that flows all over the body to destroy harmful organisms such as bacteria. This fluid can accumulate in the feet when there are problems with the lymph nodes and/or lymph glands causing swelling.
5. You weigh too much
Being overweight or obese could also cause the feet to swell. When one is overweight, there's a lot of back pressure towards the feet. This pressure impairs circulation in the legs causing cumulation of blood and other body fluids down there.
