Teachers union officials in Uasin Gishu county have differed over the reasons behind unrests that have been reported in several schools across the country.
While the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) officials say it is as a result of teacher delocalization exercise conducted by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) thinks otherwise.
According to Kuppet Uasin Gishu branch Secretary General Elija Maiyo, indiscipline among students is the major cause of the unrest.
“In 2016, the largest number of schools were burnt by students but there was no delocalization then. Let us not take advantage of delocalization but face the main issue which is indiscipline,” said Maiyo in Eldoret on Tuesday.
He pointed out that in the schools which have been burnt recently in Uasin Gishu, their principals have been in the station for over five years hence delocalization could not be the cause.
“Indiscipline can occur whether the principal is new or has been there for some time,” noted the Kuppet official.
He, however, noted that as a union, they support the proposal by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) that it will be keeping crime records of each and every student and the same will be reflected in the Certificates of Good Conduct issued by the police.
